We have heard from different parents over the years that Hong Kong secondary schools generally fail to cater to students with learning needs. These students are collectively referred to as ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) and can be given 15 minutes more on the exam at most. The government requires schools to provide inclusive education and does not have the resources to refine the needs of students with different types of learning needs.
There are more than 40 types of learning difficulties. This article is aimed at students with reading and writing difficulties , but who have basic English communication and listening skills and normal IQ , what are their choices of British boarding schools ?
In the UK, there is a charity called The Council for the Registration of Schools Teaching Dyslexic Pupils (CReSTeD) . One of its aims is to provide parents with a list of schools that have been reviewed to prove that they have the teachers and facilities to support students with dyslexia and related needs. CReSTeD reviews include: teacher training on dyslexia, non-teaching team’s knowledge of students’ learning needs, admissions arrangements, arrangements for students with learning needs and technology applications, and parents’ evaluation of the school.

Different schools offer varying experiences, service methods, target audiences, and levels of teacher support. Here are three key types:
DSP (Dyslexia Specialist Provision) Schools: These schools provide specialized support for students with dyslexia and related difficulties.
LSC (Learning Support Unit or Centre) Schools: These schools have a dedicated learning support center where a team offers timely assistance to students with learning difficulties.
WS (Withdrawal System) Schools: In these schools, students who need additional support are removed from the classroom for personalized tutoring sessions.
