Features of the British education system: British secondary school curriculum

There are many entry points, suitable for students with different ideals, backgrounds and abilities. No matter when you want to study abroad , the UK has good options, for example:

British secondary school curriculum : 2-year graduation course, suitable for those aged 16 and above: A level , IB , BTEC .

  • IB is suitable for students with high English proficiency, good time management, comprehensive abilities and strong curiosity, because the curriculum has many compulsory subjects, covers a wide range of topics, and has many papers. It also requires students to connect what they have learned with society through voluntary work. However, British universities have high and broad requirements for the IB curriculum, and there is no Advanced Credit or admission preference.
  • A level : Flexible subject selection, students can choose subjects according to their strengths. There are many schools and subjects to choose from in the UK. Students with good English proficiency, time management, comprehensive ability and curiosity can take an additional EPQ, which is equivalent to the thesis part of the IB. EPQ counts as half of the A level.
  • BTEC : Suitable for students who want to study practical subjects. The grades are composed of projects and homework. No examinations are required. The scores are recognized by most British universities and are on par with A levels.

Two major differences between the British and Hong Kong education systems

1. University Requirements

Hong Kong universities require DSE Best 5 or Best 6. University majors do not necessarily require DSE electives, but some university majors will add weighting to some DSE electives. If you lack electives, you can choose the following information according to your grade:

2. Self-funded degree

  • There is no guaranteed admission requirement for self-funded degrees and government-funded university degrees in Hong Kong, for example, self-funded degrees, associate degrees, high dips, etc. from HKU, Poly, IVE, Hang Seng University, etc. and the 8 majors do not have a guaranteed admission score requirement, for example, a HKU Space GPA of 3.4 guarantees admission to HKU Year 3.
