Canadian University Rankings QS?

There are 4 Canadian universities in the top 100 QS rankings:

  • McGill University
  • The University of British Columbia UBC
  • University of Alberta
  • University of Toronto UT

Welcome to learn about the QS ranking standards . After reading this, you will know that the QS ranking is not necessarily very practical, because 50% of the ranking results come from industry votes! The QS ranking does not rank students' employment situation at all, but you invest millions in a degree for employment!

However , if you think university rankings are important, here is the Mclean's Canadian university ranking. The Canadian magazine Mclean's began ranking Canadian universities in 1991, but Maxway believes that its reference value, like QS , is not high, because Mclean's mainly ranks the research strength of teachers and students. How many universities allow you to do research during your degree? However, Mclean's vote only 15%, while QS 50%!

Canadian University Rankings: Maclean's

Since everyone likes university rankings, here is an explanation of the Maclean's university ranking criteria in Canada, which is based on student achievement, student satisfaction, professors' teaching quality, and the support students receive.

Students (28%)

  • The number of national academic awards received by students in the past five years (i.e., Rhodes Scholarships and Fulbright Awards, professional associations, and scholarships from three federal funding agencies) is then divided by the number of full-time students at each university. (10%)
  • Opportunities for students to interact with professors: The ratio of full-time professors to full-time students (8%). The ratio of faculty to students includes graduate students and degree students.
  • Student satisfaction (10%): This includes ratings of course instructors (professors and lecturers), tutors who provide student support services, administrators, and academic advisors. It also evaluates experiences with extracurricular activities and dormitory life, as well as three very important factors: experiential learning experiences, mental health services, and the university's policies to prevent sexual assault on campus.

College (24%)

  • Teacher quality (7%): Maclean's counts the number of faculty members who have won world-class academic awards over the past five years, including the Distinguished Killam Prizes, the Royal Society of Canada awards, the 3M Teaching Fellowships and nearly 40 other awards.
    • Maclean's divided each university's number of award-winning faculty members by the number of full-time faculty members at the institution.
  • Number of faculty members who received top national research grants from SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR (12%)
    • Maclean's calculates the number of faculty members funded at each university and the total amount of funding, then divides the total by the number of full-time faculty members at the university.
  • The number and impact of papers published by faculty. (5%)

Resources (20%)

  • Resources available to each full-time student (5%)
  • The total amount of research funds allocated by the school to each full-time teacher (6%)
  • Operating budget allocated to university libraries (5%)
  • Library budget (for purchases, including electronic resources) (4%)

Student support (13%)

  • Budget for student support, including scholarships and bursaries.

Reputation (15%)

  • Much like other rankings, this is partly about assessing how different people view universities…

Before evaluating the ranking of Canadian universities , Maclean's divides Canadian universities into three categories:

  • Primarily Undergraduate Universities mainly provide degree education
  • Comprehensive Universities offers a variety of graduate and degree programs, but no medical school
  • Medical Doctoral Universities offer a variety of postgraduate and degree programs, and universities in this category all have medical schools.

Classifying universities by size first and then ranking them makes the results fairer. Otherwise, if small universities are ranked by research funding, they will definitely be lower than Medical Doctoral Universities.
