Canadian private secondary schools

Summary

This article contains the results of a Canadian government survey. Please feel free to contact Maxway to find out the reasons for the difference in academic performance between Canadian private and public high school students .

Why do Canadian private high schools have better academic performance than Canadian public high schools?

A survey released by the Canadian government looked at four aspects: student characteristics, school resources, peer influence, and provincial policies. Why do Canadian private high school students have significantly higher reading, math, and science assessments at age 15 and a higher rate of completing post-secondary education at age 23 than Canadian public high school students? The following are two major findings:

1. Students’ own conditions and the influence of their peers are one of the reasons for the difference in academic performance between Canadian private and public secondary schools . Students in Canadian private secondary schools are more likely to achieve academic success because:

  • 89% of Canadian private secondary schools use students' past academic performance as a screening criterion.
  • Students in Canadian private high schools have better family economic capabilities and family environments. For example, compared with Canadian public high schools , Canadian private high schools have a higher proportion of working parents, most of them have received college education, and there are more books and computers at home. They are also more likely to live in urban areas.

2. School resources and training have little impact on the academic performance of students in Canadian private and public secondary schools. However, teachers in the two types of schools have different views on students, which explains the difference in academic performance between students.

  • Only 0.5% of Canadian private secondary school principals believe their teaching teams have low expectations of students.

It is a common saying that people who keep company with others tend to be more loyal to them, but it has a special impact on teenagers! Teenagers want to be independent from their parents, so the influence of their friends and teachers cannot be underestimated. Since we cannot choose friends and teachers for our children, we can only minimize the negative influence by choosing schools.
